The Case of David Hennessy

Before Superintendent Hennessy, no lawman had ever taken on the American branch of the Mafia, and few people knew the organization existed. His death in 1890 sparked off what is known as the New Orleans Incident; violent racist riots in which 11 Italians were murdered. Due to widespread support from police, politicians and ordinary citizens, the rioters were never brought to trial.
